Southern Bastards Vol 1

Well, well. I had never read Southern Bastards before but had heard very good things. This volume read like a movie… almost a cliche one.

And then it wasn’t.

Who is the star of this book? I think that is about to change drastically.

Very solid read.

Rusty’s Comic of the Week: Wytches #5

Wytches 5

Three comics left… and a little disappointing overall.

MULTIVERSITY: ULTRA COMICS #1 (Morrison / Mahnke / Alamy / Altaeb / Baron) DC

Multiversity has been hit and miss with an emphasis on hit. The strength has not been the ongoing story, however. Rather it was the glimpses of different worlds under the eye of Morrison.

This issue looked to be something different, and it was. This was closely tied in with an ongoing thread throughout the others and it was really going to… uh, no. Nice conceit but it really didn’t DO anything. For the first five to ten pages I was thinking, “This is going to be comic of the week.” By the time I was finished I thought, “Uh… so that was it?”

One issue left.

DAREDEVIL #14 (Waid / Samnee / Wilson) Marvel

After a great issue last time out, this one was quite disappointing. The ‘new’ Daredevil is kind of ridiculous and his sudden attitude change is a little spurious. This was also one of those kind of choppy reads. The intro of Owl’s daughter and suddenly they were teaming up with no real interaction… do you think Waid is trying to get his story in before everything god wall Secret Warsish?

One more issue for me.

WYTCHES #5 (Snyder / Jock / Hollingsworth / Robins) Image

This was very solid. It seems like a hard shift from spooky and mysterious to hard reality and… still pretty darned spooky. It started to feel less a psychological horror story and more a monster movie.

And when did Sailor’s dad become the star of the book?

All in all, good, scary comics.

One more issue for me.

batman-the-court-of-owls_hc-cover-art

When DC launched the New 52, Batman was not one of the books I picked up. I have never been a huge Batman fan and while there have been some GREAT Batman stories, I tend to find him a little repetitive.

Later I picked up some issues during Zero Year (or whatever it was called) and wan’t impressed enough for it to catch on, despite the raves for Snyder’s run.

And I like Scott Snyder. I really liked him on Swamp Thing.

So here is The Court of Owls, which kicked off the New 52. And again, it feels a litre repetitive. Going back to Batman’s origins and rewriting little bits to fit a later story means this whole thing is based on a retcon.

But it is a relaunch so if you a re ever going to do that…

But it is quite a good read. As said, ‘Batman pushed to his limits’ has been down to death, but this is a well done version of that story.

Rusty’s Comic of the Week: C.O.W.L. #9

COWL-9-Cover

Let’s be honest… calling it the comic of the week when I am down to buying two books as arcs run out is a little silly.

Once again, I don’t mind because the comic was so good.

BLACK WIDOW #16 (Edmondson / Noto) Marvel

I am finishing this run with a story that flashes back to Natasha as a tot. Solid issue but nothing too ground breaking.

Still, seeing her pushed to shooting someone at that age works. The teaser for the next story seems… a little less interesting. We’ll see if I pick it up or not as a trade.

C.O.W.L. #9 (Kyle Higgins / Alec Siegel / Rod Reis) Image

This was a really great comic. Getting to see Radia in action, after she has been constantly pushed into a Mad Men type of a role. What really made this issue was her fight with Doppler.

He hit her with a latter out of his word balloon.

Picture that.

This comic is great. I still have two more issues to finish the arc.

Some Remarks

Just like the William Gibson book, this is a collection by the author (in this case, Neal Stephenson), from various sources – mostly non-fiction

This is a real mixed bag. There are highs like the first line from a Shire-based Crime Thriller, and lows like a WAAAAAY too long and boring discussion about undersea telecommunications cable.

2015 in Books

Some Remarks – Neal Stephenson
A Brief Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien – Nigel Cawthorne
Distrust The Particular Flavor – William Gibson
Shouting Your Name Down The Well – David McFadden
Thousand Times Broken, Three Books – Henri Michaux
Stained Pages – Sean O’Gorman

Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 5

This is a new one for me. You might think I skipped some, but actually I HAD been buying the Ultimate Collections which are the equivalent of two of the smaller collections. The thing is, Volume 3 is out of print, so I had to switch to the smaller one.

Still good stuff, though I wanted to yell at Mary Jane often through the book. She is just sooo wrong (about Gwen) … while still being very realistic.

Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 2

Bendis continued to absolutely kill it on this book, through his second year. Doctor Octopus… more Green Goblin… Kraven (who was hilariously perfect)… then there was GREAT interplay with Aunt May and some spot-on stuff with Gwen Stacy and Mary-Jane.

Ultimate-Spider-Man-Ultimate-Collection-vol_-1

I am splitting up these posts now that I am shifting to collections more and more.

This is a re-read. There is something about these issues that just blows away anything being done in the main universe with Peter.

Having said that, I like Miles a whole lot too.

The scenes with Peter and Mary are pretty much perfect.

Rusty’s Comic of the Week: Astro City #21

ASTRO_Cv21

Just about at the end of the road. Only three comics this week and all of them are final issues for me.

STAR WARS #3 (Aaron / Cassaday / Martin) Marvel

This wraps up the first story. It is nice art and okay story, but I am kind of disappointed that they jumped back in time which guarantees that nothing will ever really happen to change anything. It can’t.

SILVER SURFER #10 (Dan SLott / Michael Allred / Laura Allred) Marvel

I am kind of disappointed with Surfer saying he loves her. What is wrong with platonic couplings?

ASTRO CITY #21 (Busiek / Anderson / Ross) Vertigo

The Quarrel story has been heartbreaking but a the same time… not. Beautifully done, from end to end.

Tolkien Guide

I picked up this book from the discount section at Chapter’s… and that is about its value. The section that outlines Tolkien’s life and such was interesting but then there is a big ‘major works’ section that just runs through The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, scene by scene. Then it goes over characters and such. I can’t imagine anyone reading this book who didn’t already read those books so…
