Rusty’s Comic of the Week: Daredevil #15

Daredevil15

The return of Rusty’s Comic of the Week!

Not really, but there are some stray issues that aren’t out yet that I am still grabbing, and there were three of them this week!

All three are marked as the last issues of their respective titles that I am buying… but…

Starting at the weakest.

MULTIVERSITY #2 (Morrison / Reis / Prado / Brown) DC

They never should have made this series have its own arc. Every time Morrison just focused on making a one-off interesting world, it worked. Every time he made it part of the ‘bigger picture’ it failed.

What we have here is a half-assed, sloppy version of Crisis. Fail.

AVENGERS #44 (Hickman / Caselli / Walker / Martin) Marvel

First of… god, that cover is just horrible.

So, the world is ending. This is really the prequel to Secret Wars.

Enough. Hopefully there is an Avengers comic worth reading when we come out the other side.

DAREDEVIL #15 (Waid / Samnee / Wilson) Marvel

Wow. After two pretty bad comics, was this ever nice to read.

Great story and great art.

So, imagine that everything you ever say is recorded.

Imagine everything you ever HEAR anyone say is recorded.

Then it is broadcast to everyone.

Pretty bad, yeah?

Now imagine you are a lawyer.

Astro City Vol 2

I really enjoyed the first volume of Astro City.

The second volume is better.

The story gets a little more room to breathe as one arc takes all six issues. The story of the Confessor… the way in unfolds for us… is just great. Sure he is the Batman analog, but he ends up VERY different. By then end, you knew what was coming… both the end of the ‘Watchmen’ story and the end of the Altar-boy story.

Astro City are the best superhero comics being made. They are not trying to subvert the genre (or insult it, like a Grant Morrison story). Busiek is not parodying superhero comics or dismantling them.

He is just making better stories.

Great comics.

Astro City Vol 1

I really enjoy Astro City. This one is a re-read but I was also reading the more recent issues. It is the combination of that which makes me realize how much work and planning Busiek has put into this. He isn’t just making it up as he goes along. In this volume there is an alien who is keeping files on heroes. One of those heroes is Quarrel, who is listed as Quarrel II. That means the Quarrel back story, which was just revealed int he last six months, was there with in the first six issues back in 1995.

All of this is great… the Samaritan and Winged Victory bits especially.

Green_Lantern_No_Fear

Normally when I get a new book in a run I go back and reread the previous books.

I didn’t bother this time because Rebirth was really just a big reset button to erase the nonsense that went on before. No Fear is the REAL start to Geoff Johns’ run on Green Lantern.

And a good start it was! The stuff with Hector Hammond was spot on and while Black Hand is not so impressive (yet), the future King Shark is pretty cool and the kick-off flashback story worked.

Green Lantern – No Fear (Geoff Johns / Various Artists)
Stray Bullets Vol. 1 – Innocence of Nihilism (David Lapham)
Chew Vol. 1 – Taster’s Choice (John Layman / Rob Guillory)

StrayBulletsVol1

How did I avoid reading Stray Bullets until now?

Well, for one thing, I am kind of glad I did.

If I had read issue #1 on its own, I would have thought, “kind of violent… kind of ugly… what’s the point?”

Then, if I had read issue #2 I would have thought, “kind of violent… kind of ugly… completely unrelated to issue 1… what’s the point?”

But then, all of a sudden, it made sense to me. This is all one story, told in layers, jumping through time, where a scene from one issue can make a different comic suddenly much better. Issue #1 is incredibly brilliant once you have read later issues. An off-hand comment from a character in issue #2 makes the end of a later issue way more poignant… stuff like that.

Brilliant comic, but you really MUST read it as a collection.

Stray Bullets Vol. 1 – Innocence of Nihilism (David Lapham)

chew_vol1_tpb

Hmmm… I heard so much good response to Chew. Then I read the Chew / Revival one-shot and, well, it was pretty terrible… especially the Chew half.

But, I thought, maybe it wasn’t fair because the context was a problem Maybe the book was as great as people claimed, in its own milieu.

Spoiler: It isn’t.

I don’t regret buying it. It was an okay little read, but I just don’t understand the love for it. Just begin a little quirky does not make it a great book. The plot is paper thing and it seems more worried about the shock value (which wears off really fast) instead advancing the story.

Oh well. If you have a copy, read it, but I wouldn’t recommend buying it.

Walking Dead 6

Hmmm…. the last couple of volumes of Walking Dead have made me squirm somewhat. The rape and torture of Michonne was at least off-panel but her revenge was front and centre.

It came across a little bit like torture porn.

The story is still solid, but I didn’t care for that too much.

TheWickedAndDivine_vol1-1

I hadn’t heard much about this book, other than knowing that Gillen / McKelvie make some pretty good comics. My familiarity with the team comes from Young Avengers, which was a very solid book.

This book is pretty impressive. It has a pretty great concept (like a divine Strikeforce: Morituri), with compelling characters, beautiful art and great writing. It is a little sex obsessed, but not TOO much.

Good comics. Recommend.

The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1 – The Faust Act (Gillen / McKelvie / Wilson / Cowles)

lumberjanes_v1_cover

Wow, what a delightful book. I completely understand why so many people were raving about t his book when it came out. What the junk!

Ruthanne described it as a comic book based on Leslie Knope’s Pawnee Goddesses thrown into the supernatural realm…

That works wells enough as a description. In the midst of reading it, we were looking up all the strong women who were referenced (as exclamations… ‘Holy Bessie Coleman!’)

One thing that confused me is that the credits say it was WRITTEN by Noelle Stevenson (and Grace Ellis) and drawn by Brooke Allen. But compare the art to Stevenson’s art… even on the design pages. Then compare it to Allen’s design pages.

Isn’t this Noelle Stevenson on art?

Lumberjanes Vol.1 – Beware the Kitten Holy (Stevenson / Ellis / Watters / Allen)
Southern Bastards Vol. 1 – Here Was A Man (Aaron / Latour)

Rusty’s Comic of the… Weak?

uncanny avengers 3

Since I started filtering out my monthlies, I keep doing this post and saying, “Well, it may not be a full week, but I still stand behind the comic of the week…” or something to that effect.

This week, not so much.

I got two books that each have one more issue in the current run.

Luckily I also got two great looking tradebacks, but those are for another post (once I read them).

AVENGERS #43 (Hickman / Mayhew / Martin) Marvel

Sigh. Right after I decide that I will keep getting the main Avengers title even after I stop all other monthlies (I mean, I have them all so far, right back to 1963), the next issue I rad was downright awful.

First off, the art is terrible. I mean it really looks rushed. The story isn’t much better. It is choppy and I am pretty sure that half of what happens doesn’t make sense because I don’t read New Avengers, which is inexcusable.

What a mess.

Thankfully, when Secret Wars is all over, it seems that Hickman will no longer be leading the Avengers.

UNCANNY AVENGERS #3 (Rick Remender / Daniel Acuna) Marvel

Well the art is much better in this comic, right off the bat. The story is better as well, though still has that, ‘fighting in a vacuum’ quality that I sometimes get from Remender’s books. Hi sense of ‘place’ is not always to be liking.

Overall, a decent book, but this wouldn’t be near a Comic of the Week ‘award’ if I was still getting a full complement of books.
