Seconds

Do you want to know why I don’t regret switching from single issues to collections? Because if I hadn’t, I never would have read a book like Seconds.

This is just so good. I mean SO GOOD.

I saw the art referred to as ‘adorable’, which is pretty darned accurate, but the story is wonderful too! Katie, a restauranteur, who actually has a pretty amazing sounding life, is dissatisfied and finds a way to make things… perfect.

House spirits and (literal) magic mushrooms and friends and lovers and a magic witch’s cauldron.

And it all feels real.

This is a big book – over 300 pages – but I couldn’t put it down. Amazing

Sandman-5-cover-final-64cc0

When a comic is this slow coming out, it will take a while for me to wrap up the run…

…but it is sure worth getting.

SANDMAN: OVERTURE #5 (Neil Gaiman / J.H. Williams III / Dave Stewart) Vertigo

We meet the mother of the Endless and catch up with Destiny and a pair of Dreams… and a cool boat and a whole bunch of refugees from… am I sensing another Endless visit in the near future?

A very good comic that will be much better when read all together.

Snowcrash

My first reaction after reading this book was disappointment. I had heard so much about it and how great it was, and it didn’t live up to the hype for me.

But then I realize, I was reading the books in the wrong order.

This is almost proto-Stephenson. Once I had that in mind I could see all the signs of the things I loved so much in Cryptonomicon and Anathem. It is all here… but he was still learning who he was as a writer. This is why Zodiac (which I still enjoyed) and Cryptonomicon could read like they were written by different people. Snow Crash is the missing link.

2015 in Books

Snow Crash – Neal Stephenson
Some Remarks – Neal Stephenson
A Brief Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien – Nigel Cawthorne
Distrust The Particular Flavor – William Gibson
Shouting Your Name Down The Well – David McFadden
Thousand Times Broken, Three Books – Henri Michaux
Stained Pages – Sean O’Gorman

Wake

They had me at ‘Sean Murphy’. I LOVED Joe the Barbarian. It was my favourite min is a long time, and that same ideal art style is on display here. This is the full ten issue run, but really the first five issues and the second five issues are separate things.

After reading the first five issues I was ready to anoint this as an absolute masterpiece… but it didn’t sustain. The second half is a futuristic semi-waterworld place while the first half was an Alien style horror comic.

I liked the first half better. The end was a little too… soft, for my liking, but overall this is a very solid book and well worth the time.

The Wake (Scott Snyder / Sean Murphy)
The Fade Out, Act One (Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips)

FadeOut1

I had never read any of the Brubaker / Phillips crime comics, but I and heard good things and I was familiar with Brubaker’s Marvel work.

Set in the Golden Age of Hollywood, this is a fairly formulaic idea on the surface – guy wakes up with no memory of how he got there, dead actress, cover up, intrigue etc.

But sometimes there is a reason why a certain well is dipped into so often. In this case it is due to a clear love for the stories.

One of the potential problems with a story like this is the fringing effect, but in the case (while it obviously exists) is mitigated by ensuring that the actresses replacement is an important character in the story as well. (Though the scene with the studio exec was really weird…)

Strong first volume but here are no answers to be found here.

The Fade Out, Act One (Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips)
MIND MGMT Vol. 1 – The Manager (Matt Kindt)

Rusty’s Comic of the Week: C.O.W.L. #10

COWL_10

Two comics this week as I wrap up runs.

UNCANNY AVENGERS #4 (Rick Remender / Daniel Acuna) Marvel

No big shock why the first arc of the relaunch has them facing the High Evolutionary.

Time for a new origin for Wanda and Pietro. Sigh.

At least they made it simple, if not completely transparent and uninteresting.

One issue left to wrap up for me.

C.O.W.L. #10 (Kyle Higgins / Alec Siegel / Rod Reis) Image

I just read that there is only one more issue of this and then it is cancelled.

That is a real shame. This was probably my sleeper hit of the past year. It was such a good read.

I didn’t always like the slant they went with the union but it always read well and it feels like there is so much characterization being left on the table.

MindMGMTv1

This book is… kind of bizarre, but it a really good way. I didn’t know what it was about before I bought it (just accepting the very positive reviews), and it blew my mind.

Black ops. Mental powers of every description. Hidden stories. A little Memento-ish.

At first I didn’t like the art at all and while Kindt’s technique leaves a lot to be desired, some of the choices he makes are inspired. There was one four panel grid where the speaker was losing his memory while he spoke, and the background was losing detail with every panel. Well done.

Highly recommend.

Thor, God of Thunder Vol. 1 – The God Butcher (Aaron / Ribic)

Rusty’s (Free) Comic of the Week: The Tick

TickFCBD

So, I was up early this morning so I decided to swing by Free Comic Book Day at the Silver Snail.

I remembered why I generally don’t go to FCBD…

There is just something about people who get in line, walk past the counter, taking one of each comic, without even looking at what they are…

I don’t know. I know that FCBD is very good for the industry. I also know that some people are getting comics that they could never afford to buy.

Anyway, I scanned the counter and picked up three books that looked interesting and/or fun.

Also, please take any criticism in the spirit that it is given in. These are FREE comics, but I am still looking at them asking if they are GOOD comics.

Luckily, the pretty much are that.

AVENGERS (Waid / Asrar / Martin) Marvel

Or should I say…

UNCANNY INHUMANS (Charles Soule / Brandon Peterson / Justin Ponsor) Marvel

It is kind of funny that the title that this book CLAIMS to be – the Avengers – is less that half the comic. It is more Inhumans than Avengers.

Regardless, the Avengers story is fine. There is obviously no meat, but as a preview for the post-Secret Wars Avengers, it works. I would much rather read the Mark Waid Avengers than the Jonathan Hickman Avengers.

Interestingly, they appear to not be government funded (Good!), but are also not Stark funded, though it appears that is still Stark as Iron Man. There is either a continuity mistake in here OR post-Secret Wars will be rewriting continuity (which is what I think will happen). Mentioning Wasp as a minor character that stayed an Avenger for ‘a month’?

DOCTOR WHO (Abadzis / Carlini / Mann / Laclaustra / Centurion / Ewing / Williams / Fraser) Titan

I picked this up because… I like Doctor Who. I don’t normally read the Doctor comics, and this didn’t convince me to change that. It ended up better than the Marvel book simply because the second story was amusing. It made of FCBD as some alien (or whatever) was using free comics as a form of mind control.

THE TICK (McLelland / Redhead / others) NEC

Now THIS comic was really great! This is straight up fun Tick goodness. It isn’t just an ad for other comics. I could hear the voices from the cartoon in my head while I read it, which is a pretty good sign.

Just fun… and that is what FCBD can be about, if you let it.

ThorGodButcher

Hmmm… I have heard a lot of good thing sabot the Jason Aaron run on Thor, so I was finally giving it a try.

A little disappointed, I’ll admit.

I am not a huge fan of the ‘cutting between times’ thing, but here it was used to good effect. Still it just comes down to ‘Thor fighting something that is really strong!’, which is what generally keeps me away from Thor comics. That just isn’t that interesting.

I have hear people rave about the art.

It really, really isn’t that good.

Look at the actual art… ignoring the colours. It is… I guess sloppy is the best way to put it. Not always, but way too often. Sometimes Thor looks actually goofy, in times when he shouldn’t.

The praise should be heaped upon the colourists who have made the art look better than it really is… yet they don’t even get their names on the cover. (Ive Sorcina & Dean White, btw.)

Still worth reading, but I hope the run gets better that ‘strong guy punches other strong guy’.

Thor, God of Thunder Vol. 1 – The God Butcher (Aaron / Ribic)
Astro City Vol. 2 – Confession (Busiek / Anderson / Blyberg / Sinclair / Ross)
