Rusty's World

Rusty’s Reading List 2015 | June 2, 2015

empire of the sun

I can honestly day the Spielberg movie didn’t influence me at all, because I have never seen it.

I’m not sure where this copy came from. Used I assume.

Anyway, as I started reading it, I had in my mind that I was reading a classic… and it absolutely did not measure up.

At first.

The opening scenes just didn’t have a lot of feeling to them. I know he was trying to establish the character of Jim, but it just felt like he knew that this part of the book was not where his interest lied.

But once the war starts. Whoa.

Here is a story about war where you NEVER know what is going on. The whole thing is told front he point of view of a young boy and you live it as he lives it. This was moving and painful.

The part that I felt deepest was hardly even mentioned… when he was reunited with his parents. You never even ‘see it’, because this ISN’T all about Jim. His parents lived ‘their own war’.

Highly recommend.
