Rusty's World

Rusty’s Reading List 2015 | June 19, 2015

I wrote this in between ‘sessions’ of reading ‘Come Cold River’ by Karen Connelly.

I sit in the dugout
Third-base side

Half-drunken pseudo-athletics
Before me / bore me

The other occupants
All hail from much further
West + East than I –
The fabled dugout of Babel
And I do not understand a word

I sit at the end of the bench
And read ‘The War’
By Karen Connelly
And hope that no one
Notices my face

This is an incredibly powerful volume of poetry. There are poems that moved me near to tears, partially aided by the location of much of it – Calgary.

I grew up in Victoria but I ‘grew up’ in Calgary, spending my early twenties there.

Some of this content seems so close to my life then while still being MILES (kilometres?) away.

Moving and heart breaking.

And yes, Ms. Connelly, keep asking those questions.
