I don’t have a picture of the cover of the chapbook I just read because it isn’t very widely circulated. There were only 100 copies made as a give-away in conjunction with the VERSeFest 2015 reading by Raul Zurita.

This was, simply put, the most powerful poetry reading I have ever attended. The emotion conveyed with every word was palpable. He was not speaking in English but there was a translator on stage to ensure everyone could understand… but, how could you not?

This reading was pain and history and politics and art.

I was not the only person in the room with a case of the onion-eye… not by a long shot.

The-Late-Child-and-Other-Animals-Cover

The last book I’ll be buying from Silver Snail. Sad. (They are open until Sept. 13th, but I have gone down my want list and this was the last one they had in stock.)

This is avery interesting book. It is biographical, so doesn’t always lend itself to a tight plot. In fact, there were times where I felt that she was clearer setting something up, which never materialized. (I mean, honestly, part way through, didn’t this seem like she was going to discover that she as gay? And that she was going to fall for a blonde girl? Nope. She got a french boyfriend instead.)

The section about the dance school, though. Oh my. I thought was going to pass out from holding my breath. And I was SO disappointed in her mother. I suppose the opening with the (awful) court experience was supposed to show why she might act like that but… no. “But soon they forgot.” Chilling.

It looks very ‘European’ and that works for it. Good book.

What_does-a-House_want_220

I picked this book up at VERSeFest, as I do many of my poetry books. I was grabbed right away, even before I got to Geddes’ poetry by a quote included by Milan Kundera. Already back on my heels from that, the firs Geddes poem is from the point of view of a mass killer.

Unsettling, certainly.

Unsure of how this was going to go, I hit a poem I heard him read at VERSeFest about Sandra Lee Scheuer, one of the students killed at Kent State.

A lot of the book is like that – punch after punch, but all of it level and thoughtful. But then, as he started off a section about a bridge collapse, he hit us with An Uneducated Guess, which was beautiful in its simplicity.

Very worth the read.

25YearsofTree

This book was given to me as a gift when I featured at the Tree Reading Series last year. Reading through this, I was even more grateful for the opportunity to put my name beside the greats who have graced their podium over the years.

I was quite taken with ‘Magi’ by Steven Heighton, who was one of the many new poets I encountered in this anthology. Discovering a section by David McFadden was also a treat.

I nice overview of poetry over a 25 year span.
