TransformersVSGIJoe

Those of you who read this blog might be surprised to see the book shown above.

You would be right to.

I see Transformers vs G.I. Joe on an end of year list for 2014 where the writer talked about how this wasn’t what you were thinking. It was an indy comic creator with an amazing homage to these old franchises.

Huh.

Well, I guess. It isn’ tall that different from this sold comics. The problem is, this sold comics weren’t very good, and tho sis no different. This is pure nostalgia with only a rudimentary semblance of plot and art that is mostly just busy (though with flashes of ‘better’).

If you want those old stories, go back and buy them. I am sure you can get them cheap. (And I DID like some of those Larry Hama Joe stories…)

Here

Wow.

That almost seems like an understatement.

This book is about place. In fact, every page of the book is set int eh exact same place, using time as the variable to give you peeks into different stories in different times with different people, but all in the same place.

I am passing this book on to my historian wife and I recommend it to anyone who thinks about the nature of place or anyone who appreciates comics as art.

How to be Happy

This is a little bitter-sweet. You may have noticed that I haven’t had many updates to my comic reading list lately. The first reason is because I was waiting for Comet Comics to open up – replacing Silver Snail as my chosen store.

The second reason is that once again, I have to scale back my comic-related purchases. Those that know me, know why, and it is the why that makes it tough.

Well, whoever said life is fair?

Anyway, I had ordered a few books during the break, and there of them came in. I have one more on order so that is four books I have/am getting for sure. After that it will slow down quite a bit.

‘How to be Happy’ is a collection by cartoonist Eleanor Davis and was a New York Times best-seller. Nothing in it addresses the title, though the best story in the book teaches the exact opposite. There is some great stuff in here and there is also some stuff that left me scratching my head, wondering what the point was. That’s art sometimes. It isn’t always easy.

Shane Rhodes X

I wasn’t sure quite what to expect with this book. I won it as a door prize at VERSeFest this year, and I was certainly familiar with the NAME Shane Rhodes, but not his poetry.

I am really glad I won this, not for the least reason that I wouldn’t have purchased it. A quick flip through finds a lot of … visual representation of art that while I respect, isn’t usually what a seek out.

But I am sure glad I got to read it! This is all found poetry of one sort or another, done as an expose into the way the Aboriginal peoples of Canada have been treated by the government, with treaties begin front and centre. Having said THAT< my favourite part was the flip-book portion (Anti-poems) that was taken from comment threads of people TALKING about native issues on the internet. It was powerful.

Good book. I am really glad I have it. I will be reading it again, I am certain.
