Rusty's World

Rusty’s Reading List 2016 | January 31, 2016

I heard Ms. Halfe recite at CFSW last year and felt compelled to pick up one of her books at the Merch table. I am so glad that I did.

This is a not a book of poems as much as it is a poem in book form… or maybe a history book in poetry form… or maybe family stories in the form of a Governor General’s Award Nominee.

She slides in an out of voices and dialects, through eras and peoples. I remember the jarring feeling when hearing from a colonist and the very interesting tonal shift when she chose to use ‘accented english’ for the native speakers.

The biggest loss for me (though this is my failing, certainly not the book’s or Halfe’s), was my inability to ‘hear the Cree words included. This is only due to my inexperience listening to the language. (There is a glossary in the back for those who wish it, though I did not think it necessary to appreciate the poetry. The glossary is fun, though. Where else would you find out that the Cree word for honey is literally bee shit.)

I wonder if Amal El-Mohtar knows that. πŸ™‚

Very much recommended.
