It almost seems silly to read this after reading March, but hey, entertainment counts too, right?

By all accounts, Marvel has down a great job with the Star Wars comics since Disney acquired the rights. They are set immediately following the destruction of the first Death Star, which bothered me at first, but i helps them avoid any continuity snafus with the movies, like happened with the old Marvel series.

This book turns Vader into a dark reflection of Luke, complete with his own evil version of C3PO and R2-D2.

Generally well done book.

This deserves a spot on bookshelves everywhere. If you have room for Maus on your shelves, you have room for March.

March is Congressman John Lewis’ first-hand accounting of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. The story is engaging, personal and above all, incredibly important. This is just part one as there will be three books in all, but in this volume you get Lewis’ early life and see what put him on the path towards the fight for rights.

Is it too early to announce my book of the year?

MsMarvel3

Another book I was invested it has advanced far enough for a collection for me. Ms. Marvel is a delight of a book, and this is even better than it had been before I stopped buying singles. Miyazawa’s art is perfect and Wilson writing continues to set just the right tone.

The story with the ‘cute guy’ was predictable, but the undertones were amazing! Now THAT is how you write a story that uses sexual analogies without actually subjecting your character to that particular indignity (and irrevocably ruining the tone of the book).

Masterfully done.

Saga5

It may seem that I am behind on my reading but that is mostly because I have broken my own habit as a book serial monogamist, and I am currently reading three books at once (a Neal Stephenson novel, a Milton Acorn collection, and an American Women in Spoken Word collection).

And now I had a splurge day down at Comet Comics.

(First, let me just say that the low Canadian dollar is problematic for book buyers. Ugh.)

When I stopped buying monthlies and started buying trades, there was a period where all I was buying was somewhat obscure books. This is because the more mainstream books had to get enough issues out to make collections of comics I didn’t already have. That has now happened so I am getting some books that I would have been getting the singles.

This starts with Saga. I love Saga. I have missed it.

Having said THAT, this book is a little disappointing. We have three separate groups, all with their own quests, and a whole lot of wheel spinning. The core of this book is the family, and Marko and Alanna didn’t even see each other until the very end of the book.

Overall, Saga is great, but volume 5 is not their high point.
