Word Warriors

As mentioned elsewhere, I am basically reading three books at once just now, and I just finished one of them. This is a wonderful anthology of American female Spoken Word artists. The book includes some great names like Andrea Gibson, Lenelle Moise, Staceyann Chin, Patricia Smith, Alix Olson, and more. It also introduced me to some great poets who I was unfamiliar with like Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, Genevieve Van Cleve, Julia Serano, and much more.
What a really liked about this collection was that each poet had two poems as well as an… essay, I guess. Or memoir. Or interview. It let’s you get to know the poet from more than just their work.

Interesting book.

  1. I just finished this myself. Definitely a great anthology. It was Lenelle Moïse’s inclusion that drew me in. A great presentation and powerful collection. I particularly loved the introduction to each writer through their essay or interview before moving on to the pieces – which I appreciated being split between a better known and a newer work. My favourite anthology I’ve read since Andrea Gibson’s ‘We Will Be Shelter.’
