SerialKillersClub

Another gifted book from my hospital stay, this one from Riz Javeri.
This book is basically Dexter-lite and really fails in that there isn’t a single likeable character and all too many of those characters are just so incredibly stupid. Acting stupid can be a character trait… but all of them? Then there was a ‘twist’ that was so random and pointless that it didn’t add anything.

This one is a miss.

Acorn

This book was gifted to me by my friend Kevin Matthews during my recent hospital stay. I have been working my way through it but I have found that this is not a book you plow through – or, if you do, it is to your detriment.

The book is delightfully uneven. By that I mean you can find yourself reading a strong piece on Irving Layton, communism, or mature and then you suddenly hit a pseudo-graphic poem about having sex. (I actually didn’t care for that one.)

There are a number of poem written for other poets, which was a bit of a joy. If we can not love our communities, what are those communities for?

I did wonder of in certain circles that comes across as name-dropping. Maybe if I wrote a poem that started with “So, I was sitting down with Shane and Shayne…”

Lovely book. Thank you Kevin.

britishmuseum

This book has the advantage of being short… so it doesn’t take up too much of your time even if you, like me, don’t tend to give up on books.

That is a good thing, because this book isn’t. Good, that is.

Based on the myriad of covers out there when I search on it, this keeps getting reprinted. I don’t know why. It might be popular among repressed Catholics (as a subset of all Catholics – I am not claiming all Catholics are repressed), or literary scholars who enjoy figuring out all the pastiches. (To0 me, all the different writing styles just make the book disjointed and uneven.)

Oh well, they can’t all be winners.

TrueGrit

I am really enjoying a Milton Acorn poetry book at the moment but with all the doctor’s appointments etc, sometimes you need something that needs a little else focus.

This is one of the books that Riz brought me in the hospital and something about it left me very confused. Not the contents, but the cover. Front and back covers had quotes about how funny the book is and how it is a ‘comic tour de force’.

Uh… really? This book isn’t a comedy. It is certainly amusing in parts but it reads pretty much like a straight ahead western to me, with the shift being that it is from an alternative viewpoint (a young girl). But still… not a comedy.

Entertaining, though. An interesting note is that because I have seen the more recent movie, there were times that I could see the characters while I was reading it. Mattie was always Hailie Stanfield and LaBeouf was always Matt Damon. However, Rooster was John Wayne.

LumberjanesVol2

This is the second book sent to me by Shayne. Lumberjanes is delightful. This book isn’t quite as great as the first volume, since it has to move on from just introducing the characters and reminding us how amazing they are. They get more into plot. It had to happen. 🙂
