Strangler Fig

I got this chapbook when Magpie featured at VERSeFest a few years ago, though that was far from the first time I had seen Magpie perform. In fact, I believe she featured at the second Capital Slam I ever attended, back in 2006.

I would describe her poetry in this book as beautifully bleak. If you focus only on the tone, it would be easy to read this as depressing, but that would be ignoring the wonderful way she spins those words and the hidden joy you can find in between the lines. (And it isn’t always hidden.)

Magpie is incredibly talented, but that is no secret at all.

I read this book in one sitting. I picked it up after a great reading at VERSeFest.

That’s all I am going to say because I am actually writing a full review of the book for another website. I will link to it when it goes up.

Spoiler: I like the book

JohnnyMac

After reading a disappointing novel, I dipped into my backlog and discovered a chapbook by super-poet Johnny MacRae! I got this when he featured at CapSlam a couple of years back and somehow had never read it.

My loss. This is wonderful work. It is only two poems but the first takes up most of the book. The interesting thing to me was how his voice transcends the words. Rather than digging into the specifics lines, I found myself letting the clear-as-day voice of Johnny pour over me. He is a superstar.

I also notice that there is a download code on the back for a selection of his love performances from VanSlam. I wonder if I can still download that…
