I got this chapbook when Magpie featured at VERSeFest a few years ago, though that was far from the first time I had seen Magpie perform. In fact, I believe she featured at the second Capital Slam I ever attended, back in 2006.

I would describe her poetry in this book as beautifully bleak. If you focus only on the tone, it would be easy to read this as depressing, but that would be ignoring the wonderful way she spins those words and the hidden joy you can find in between the lines. (And it isn’t always hidden.)

Magpie is incredibly talented, but that is no secret at all.
