Two issues of ARC in a row!

Issue #72 is from Fall 2013 and is dedicated to The North, and all that entails.

I find the concept of ‘The North’ interesting, in much the same way I find the concept of ‘The West’ interesting. I was born and raised in Victoria, B.C. and as such I would bristle when I would hear ‘eastern’ media refer to places like Regina as being ‘western’. How about Winnipeg? How can Manitoba possible be considered ‘West’?

Being in Victoria also meant growing up with tv and radio from Washington state… part of the ‘Pacific Northwest’. Seattle being called anything that was called ‘North’ seemed ludicrous. But then so did Americans saying that I was part of the North, with its snow and ice. In Victoria. Which is situated south of the 49th parallel.

But this issue gives as a view of The North that knows what it is and what it wants to show us. It gives a glimpse of life in places that would laugh at the idea that Victoria or Ottawa or… Calgary are Northern cities.

My favourites are probably Caleb Harrison or Robin McGrath or… actually, no ‘or’, definitely Norma Dunning.
