touch-the-donkey-10

I read another chapbook from rob mclennan, this one was the 10th issue of his series, Touch the Donkey. As usual with rob’s publications, it is is eclectic and interesting. I was especially taken with he very first piece in the issue, ‘Breastwork’ by Meredith Quartermain. I wasn’t sold on it until he last line, when it retroactively won me over.

Hulk_Visionaries_Peter_David_Vol_1_1

This is  a re-read as I recently picked up Volume 3. This is the start of the Peter David run and he hadn’t found his groove yet. He spent most of this volume mopping up the remains of the John Byrne and Al Milgrom runs… Hulk busters and a temporary Rick Jones Hulk.

This is also very early Todd McFarlane. Not yet the 90’s star he would grow into.

Comic Books Read in 2016

Marvel Visionaries: Peter David – Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 (David / McFarlane)
Punisher: Army of One (Ennis/Dillon/Palmiotti)
Punisher: Welcome Back Frank (Ennis/Dillon/Palmiotti)

March Book Two (Lewis / Aydin / Powell)
Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 1 – Vader (Gillen / Larroca / Delgado)
March Book One (Lewis / Aydin / Powell)
Ms. Marvel Vol. 3 – Crushed (Wilson / Miyazawa / Bondoc)

aboveground-pirie-sex

I have been known to say that I am not a big fan of ‘sex poetry’. What I really mean is that I am not generally a fan of ‘erotic poetry’, though there have been exceptions.

This is the former without being the latter. The sex is there, but it certainly does not mean to titillate, rather… illuminate? Causing you to ruminate?

Or maybe just enjoy. This is a very good chapbook by a very good poet. Thanks to rob mclennan for passing this beauty my way. Thanks to Pearl for writing it.

thekey

This is not the sort of book you will generally see on this list, but that’s okay.

Some handful of years ago, I bought Sanctus – this book’s predecessor – in an airport gift shop. I was getting on a place and had nothing to read.

Basically we are talking about a mystery grounded in fake secrets of the church. So, yeah, a Di Vinci Code knock-off. Well, let’s say they fit into the same oeuvre, rather than a blatant nod.

But then, surprisingly, I liked it.

It read as a one-off but some time later I found out that it morphed into a trilogy. I guess it sold well.

This is book two, and once again, I mostly enjoyed it. Diverting.

oratorealis1

Oratorealis is a poetry magazine focusing on spoken word and experimental poetry. It is published by Shayne Avec I Grec and edited by Aaron Simm.

Shayne gave me a subscription for my birthday and I have a poem the will be included in issue #2.

So, the odds of me being an impartial critic here are pretty much zero.

Luckily, partiality isn’t a problem, because this is a great launch to the periodical! We are talking Mary Pinkoski and RC Weslowski. Jillian Christmas and Bill Bissett interviews. Tanya Evanson and Prufrock Shadowrunner.
And Danielle Altrogge. And Cathy Petch. And Kaie Kellough. And Rabbit Richards… Johnny Trinh… Dana I.D. Matthews…and…and…and…

This is JAM-PACKED.

I read this when I first got it and have now really pored over it and I am very impressed and excited to be part of issue #2.
