Rusty’s Reading List 2017 | February 10, 2017

The theme for the latest issue of Arc is ‘Art in the End Times’ and I’m not going to lie, some of this was really depressing. But a cathartic kind of depressing, like listening to the blues.
Interestingly, what jumps out at me the most isn’t poetry, per se, but two really powerful essays – one by Ben Gallagher and one by Katherine Leyton (whose book has already appeared on this list – last year).
Really powerful stuff.

Not to say that there isn’t great poetry too! ‘The day the Syrian child washed ashore’ by Wendy Donawa is chilling in its honesty. Alessandra Naccarato’s ‘One Hundred Ways To Die In Yellowstone’ makes death kind of funny… except when it isn’t. This piece sneaks up on you a bit.

Then there is a limerick in there. At first it seemed out of place but… it is actually pretty good!

I happened to be listening to the Arctic Monkeys album ‘AM’ who reading a bunch o this. I don’t know why, but it just seemed to fit.
