Peter F. Yacht Club is one of rob mclennan’s poetry magazines. In this case it is one that me puts out in conjunction with VERSeFest. Since that festival ended today, and I picked up a new issue, I figured maybe it was time to read LAST year’s issue. (Sigh.)

What a stellar line-up! To list just a few poets: Cameron Anstee, Frances Boyle, George Elliott Clarke, Amanda Earl. Doyali Islam, Katherine Leyton, Colin Morton, Pearl Pirie, Monty Reid, and, of course, rob mclennan.

Pretty impressive list!

rob’s publications are always worth the read!

Canticles

As way o introduction, whenever I am asked what my favourite book is, I have a few answers. These jostle about inside my head, no single one gaining the top spot but all falling under the category of my favourite books. They are:

Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien
The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay – Michael Chabon
Infinite Jest – David Foster Wallace
George & Rue – George Elliott Clarke

This is tell you that I am a FAN of George Elliott Clarke and have been for quite some time. I have seen him read… at least four times. Maybe Five. He is always joyous and entertaining. He loves what he does and it shows.

I wanted to tell you this before I say… I did not enjoy Canticles. There are some great moments in there and I would never say that any of the work is BAD, by any means. I just found the subject matter really grew heavier and heavier as I read.

I imagine that was the point.

But there is only so much of line after line of rape and gruesome violence that I can take. This was a long read because I kept getting away from it – trying to give myself a break from it.

Sometimes I can read something painful and at the end think that the pain was worth it. I can’t say that here. At least not right  now.

I am not trying to discourage anyone else from eating it – just be aware what you re getting into. This is really painful material.
