Canticles

As way o introduction, whenever I am asked what my favourite book is, I have a few answers. These jostle about inside my head, no single one gaining the top spot but all falling under the category of my favourite books. They are:

Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien
The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay – Michael Chabon
Infinite Jest – David Foster Wallace
George & Rue – George Elliott Clarke

This is tell you that I am a FAN of George Elliott Clarke and have been for quite some time. I have seen him read… at least four times. Maybe Five. He is always joyous and entertaining. He loves what he does and it shows.

I wanted to tell you this before I say… I did not enjoy Canticles. There are some great moments in there and I would never say that any of the work is BAD, by any means. I just found the subject matter really grew heavier and heavier as I read.

I imagine that was the point.

But there is only so much of line after line of rape and gruesome violence that I can take. This was a long read because I kept getting away from it – trying to give myself a break from it.

Sometimes I can read something painful and at the end think that the pain was worth it. I can’t say that here. At least not right  now.

I am not trying to discourage anyone else from eating it – just be aware what you re getting into. This is really painful material.
