Diversions - Murray

This is a book of aphorisms. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, aphorisms are for people who find haiku just a little too wordy. Parsing the difference between aphorisms as poetry and witty tweets may be a tough line to draw.

Having said that, don’t let me steer you away from a very good book! I saw Murray at the Laureate event late last year. Murray (was? is?) the Poet Laureate for St.John’s Newfoundland. He actually quit the position over the city’s cuts to arts funding, but I think he ended up being reappointed…

Regardless, if you think lines like ‘Mirrors are a form of time travel’ or ‘Soldiers in the black and white wars still saw their blood in colour’ then this is the book for you.

It can my argued that this isn’t a book, but I include other Poetry periodicals as books so I will with this one.
I think I got this as part of the Swag Bag at Verses Festival of Words in Vancouver.
It is interesting, though short fiction is not something I actively seek out. There is a very solid poetry feature by Sharon Webb-Campbell in here.

More Akira. Not normally being a manga fan, I find the variance in facial expressions quite interesting. They switch from ‘realistic’ to ‘exaggerated’ from panel to panel to change the mood of what is happening.

I am not a huge manga fan, but I love Akira, both the comic and the movie version… but the comic is better. I originally was buying it in this collection from Epic. Alas, I never finished it and by the time I was able to, I had to switch to a different publisher, where the volumes don’t align perfectly.

Random aside that has nothing to do with this comic, other than tangentially.

Some great time ago I was involved in e-mail wrestling leagues. This was a (somewhat odd) thing where you had a wrestler or wrestlers and wrote promos and other people wrote matches etc. It was a communal writing exercise really. I took part both as a ‘handler’ and a s match and show writer.

My main wrestler was a character named ‘Rocket Man’ Timothy N. Turner. I also ran his brother, ‘Constable’ Tom Turner, and briefly a character named Red ‘Monkeywrench’ Ledret. But I also had one other. He was a masked wrestler named Steele Raider, handled by someone else. I took him over and unmasked him as a Japanese wrestler named Akira Saito. I made that name up, though was obviously inspired by Akira.

So, when I opened this copy of Akira I was somewhat surprised to see a credit for the Designer of the Kodansha Ltd. (first Japanese collection) copy: Akira Saito.

Anyway, this is a really good comic, I highly recommend it.

Age of Bronze 1

This is a re-read from my library. Shanower previously came to my attention with the Oz graphic novels but with his you can really tell it is a labour of love. The story of the Trojan War is already fascinating and Shanower humanizes it.

Quality read.

I have said before I great I think this book was. It still holds up. Strong poetry, emotional narrative and art that really serves the purpose.

And yes, it was for a good cause and had the extra impact of being one of the last things Downie did, artistically.
