The reason I have this book is a little unusual. I was contacted by Oxford Press a while back because the author wanted to use a quote from my blog. I agreed and they promised to send me a copy of the book… and here it is!

This is definitely a ‘scholarly’ take. The verbiage is a lot to slog through for the uninitiated (including me), but if you can get past that she is using the verbiage to make solid points. Can words constitute harm? Well, of course they can, as far as I am concerned. McGowan doesn’t leave it at that, she uses this book to prove it.

This book is the counterpoint from any time someone has said ‘sticks & stones’ to you. Words can hurt a lot worse than broken bones.

I had heard that the new Star Wars comics back at Marvel were really good, but I had doubts. Adaptations are usually more miss than hit. But this is really, REALLY, good! If you are a Star Wars fan (and by that I mean, an old school Star Wars fan), this is the comic for you!
If you are someone who refuses to call Star Wars ‘A New Hope’, and you wanted to grab a comic that bridges the gap between Star Wars and Empire, you have got it. Jason Aaron has the ‘ voice’ down. You can HEAR the characters as they speak. Even Jabba. John Cassaday does a wonderful artist’s impression of actors that you know oh so well.
Anyway. It is good. I heartily recommend it.

Sigh.
This is not the sort of book I would usually pick up. A number of years ago I was in an airport (I think), and needed a book. I bought Sanctus, by Simon Toyne. It was a sort of conspiracy thriller, built around the church, but a fictionalized version.
It wasn’t a ‘religious’ book.
Anyway, I enjoyed it more than I would have thought. Enough that when I realized it was going to be a trilogy, I casually watched for the second and third and picked them up.
This is the third.
I want my time reading them back.
A trilogy of conspiracy thrillers that led up a ridiculously cliche ending about a ‘second coming’ that changes the structure of the universe and somehow is going to make everyone stop fighting and love each other, or something like that.
Hey, I like fantasy and science fiction, but these books pretended to be something other than that.
At least it is clearly marked ‘fiction’.
