When I was reading comics on a regular basis, this book bothered me. Oracle was one of the best characters in the DCU and it felt the change was so unnecessary that it was insulting to readers who looked up to Oracle as a disabled hero. I say unnecessary because it felt they could have done this same book using Stephanie Brown and left Oracle as Oracle.
Now that I am not reading on a monthly bases, continuity has become less and less important to me so I can judge a book like this on its own merits.
They took some heat for this volume due to the depiction of Dagger Type as a stereotypical trans villain – heat which Stewart acknowledged and accepted. Overall, though, this book is pretty sleek. It is very much ‘of its time’, but that time is well illustrated here.
A solid book in general.

As always, disclaimer: I am the Spoken Word Editor for ARC.
That doesn’t mean I see all that is in it before it comes out. (Just some of it.)
Which also means that I get to dive it and enjoy just like you all do. This time out it is the Poem of the Year issue and I am part of that process, so that wasn’t new to me – it is a heck of a poem, though. Writing about what it is like in the hospital when you are more than just visiting is something I do quite a bit. Sadiqa De Meijer nails it with ‘The Imaging Department’.

I also want to point out the translation feature. Ghayath Almadhoun (translated from Arabic by Catherine Cobham), has a poem called ‘How Hope Became Green’ that really blew me away. Excellent stuff.

This is really a big magazine, but it is square bound and I am planning to keep it so it goes in with my books.
This is hardly an in-depth look at the first half of David Bowie’s career, but it is an interesting read, seeing the (ahem) changes from one mini-era to the next.
One of the things it reminded me was the awful tie between creative brilliance and mental hardships. There are a number of places where they mention how much cocaine Bowie was doing and how skeletal and unwell he really was. Bowie himself has stated that he has no memory of recording Station To Station, which was an incredible album. It makes me feel a little guilty. Would I rather that art was never created? I wish I could honestly say yes.

This was a very solid issue. The things that jumped at me were the story by Janalyn Guo (‘Reanimate’), and the poem by Scott Withiam (“Bob Being a Manhole’)

The whole issue was a solid read that I kept coming back to between books.

The honest reason why I wanted to try out The Kingkiller Chronicles is that I watch Acquisitions Inc. (The Penny Arcade live D&D session), and I find Pat entertaining and likeable.
I think the biggest issue I had when I read it is something that is kind of unfair. Basically this is a throwback to the novels I read as a teenager. That should be a good thing – and it IS, most of the time. Sometimes, though, I notice that his female characters seem more like ‘types’ than people. Denna, especially – what is that trope? Magic Pixie Dream Girl? She isn’t THAT, exactly, but she is awfully idealized.
But then I remember that this story is being told BY a character who is quite smitten with her. Her idealization makes more sense then.
Every time we go back to the framing sequence, I was annoyed, as well. It reminds me that this is really BACK story, the way it is set up. Between those interjections, I can ignore that somewhat.
Honestly, I still quite enjoyed the book, but I am very glad that this isn’t ALL we get in SFF any more.

The interesting thing about Doom Patrol Book Two is that it is the 3rd in the series of Grant Morrison Doom Patrol books. Kind of. It seems that they took the various volumes and merged them into bigger volumes… or something. I wanted the old book three and got the old books three & four.

Okay, I lied. That is not the most interesting thing about this spectacle fo a comic book. This volume includes the introduction of Danny the Street, my pick as the most interesting character idea in comics since… well… ever. It also has the introduction and origin of Flex Mentallo.
It also has a storyline that is an absolute mess, in the Grant Morrison, bad linear logic style. But it isn’t all that. In fact, it includes an incredibly straight-forward story called The Beard Hunter. Morrison CAN write in that style. He just chooses not to.

Doom Patrol continues to be super-heroes through a weirdness filter… and aren’t super-heroes pretty weird to begin with? This is great stuff.
