Rusty’s Reading List 2019

When my friend Brad Morden told me that he was launching Write Bloody North last year, I was clearly going to support the venture. But when he told me of the books that were coming out, nothing could keep me away!
I just finished one of the first books he put out, and… wow. This book is incredible. It is the best poetry book I have read this year – and that includes some stiff competition!
Sometimes I savour a book. Sometimes I can’t put it down and rush through. This one was a bit of both, because I can’t tell you how many times I stopped while reading the poem ‘Missing’, to go back and re-read the whole thing, with the newest lines changing how I received the earlier ones. There is so much in the poem – and this is just one! Every piece resonates in varying frequencies. For example, despite knowing almost nothing about the political situation in Nigeria (and even saying ‘almost’ is giving me too much credit), Titi’s two poems about Muhammadu Buhari can be treasured by anyone who knows the feelings of hope and betrayal that come with putting faith in political leader who lets you down. (Can some more left-leaning supporters of Justin Trudeau understand?)

Overall, this i snot only a book I highly recommend, it isa book that I hope receive the highest of accolades and awards. It is very deserving.

This collection is a run from Detective comics mostly known as being by Steve Engelhart and Marshall Rogers, though they actually overlap with other great creators. The binding them seems to be Silver St. Cloud, and while she is great, Batman mooning over her after she leaves is a bit much. Regardless, this is a good read of Batman stories – and is pretty much what I think of when I think of Batman. Grim, but not too grim. Odd villains and strong storytelling. Entertaining.

Sometimes you read an issue and realize it just wasn’t for you. I am not saying that the poetry in this volume was sub-par, at all. Rather, I am saying that the theme (Coven), didn’t really speak to me. It happens.

That isn’t to say there wasn’t poetry I liked. Amber Dawn’s “The World’s Oldest Love Spell (A Fairy Tale)” was very good. As was Laura Cok’s “Cures For Loneliness”, though it reminded me heavily of “How To Be Alone” by Tanya Davis. That is not an unflattering comparison. There were others as well. I might have been better served not reading so much at once. My inner skeptic was too busy pushing back.

I used to have a subscription to Bill James On-line. It was worth the money, but I found that I wasn’t diving in as much as I should/ Basically, I am not that interested in digging deep while reading on-line. I prefer books… or even magazines. Paper.
So, these books are great! They collect the best columns from Bill’s site (at least, the ones by him), and puts them in book form.
Now, are ALL the articles in this collection great? No. ‘Experiment in Summary’ is not what anyone buying this book wants. However, the articles about dividing Eras or tough and say schedules or Yaz vs Billy Williams or big game pitchers… those are well worth the price of admission.

This is a special issue of Grain, spotlighting Indigenous writers. I saw Louise Bernice Halfe’s name on the cover and snapped it up. It is well worth the time. There are also other great writers in here like Ashley Hynd and Janet Rogers.
