Rusty's Reading List 2019

I remember when this came out. I was working at Arthur’s Place and the idea that a HC GN could generate the kind of buzz it did was unprecedented. But it was worth it.
Looking at my today’s standards, the story is nothing amazing but the art continues to be incredible.
Reading it today, I found a lot of parallels as we just finished the first season of Mindhunter. Looking too closely at damaged minds can cause its own damage. Very Nietzsche, or whatever.

Frank Miller is a talented, yet sometimes overrated writer. Dark Knight Returns is given more credit than it deserves (though it is still very good), and books like Sin City are certainly worthy of the praise, but he has also done some stuff that is, well, less good. (I have never read the anti-terrorism GN, or the later Dark Knight sequels. For a reason.)

His work with Mazzucchelli, however, is his best, as far as I am concerned. I would put Daredevil Born Again and the top of the list, but Batman Year One is not far off. Are there things in this that I don’t like? Sure. Turning Selina Kyle into a prostitute was pretty typical nonsense from Mike (though it was written well, in that context). Jim Gordon is the star of the book… but why the affair?

Oh well. Still strong material, though a little bit ‘of its time’.

I have known Ben for a little while, and we even worked together on boards for Arc Magazine and VERSeFest, but I had never really dug into his poetry. Recently I was browsing the (much too small and hard to find) poetry section at Chapters and stumbled across this book. I snapped it up, and I am very glad I did!
This is a very strong collection, as anyone who is familiar with Ben’s work would assume, I am sure. I especially liked the second section of the book, leading off with ‘Loosestrife’. The long piece, ‘Lime Kiln Quay Road’ is quite notable. (I believe Ben won an award for the chapbook version.)
If you happen to be browsing the poetry section of your local book emporium, be sure to give this a go!

This book… confuses me a bit. I am at odds. A lot of it is because there is terminology that Indigenous Americans use that here in Canada would be considered incredibly racist… towards Indigenous people.
Heck, they call themselves Indians. That is definitely not okay up here.
Then there is the title of the book. Pretty awful.

And then the book itself… is really, really good. It is a crime book, set on reservation lands, but without the ‘Val Kilmer’ types stepping in to give white audiences a POV character. When it does give you that type… it even tips the trope on the head by making ‘Diesel Engine’ totally unlikeable, and then gives you a spotlight issue showing his background to make you feel bad for him. They do the same for Red Crow, the antagonist of the book. Meanwhile Dash Bad Horse, the protagonist, is often a real asshole.
The characters are layered, in other words.

They way the jump back and forth in time isn’t unique to this book, but it is very effective.

I have to fight past some of the words… because I am a bleeding heart (small l) liberal. (and I REALLY wish it was called something else)
