Sometimes it feels like Alan Moore’s greatest strength is taking existing characters and figuring out ways to make them as dark as possible. Even Swamp Thing was that, at first. Watchmen was the Charlton characters.
Then here is Miracleman. Which was really Marvelman. Which itself was a British knock-off of Captain Marvel (the original, Shazam one).
So it is derivative of a derivative? Technically, but it is also a great deconstruction of the Super-hero tropes.
Hasn’t that been done to death? Well, yeah… Now. But Miracleman was one of the O.G.s
Great read.

I remember reading ‘The Imaging Department’ when we were deliberating for the Arc Poem of the Year. I was so glad when it won. I didn’t know Sadiqa then, but I have worked with her since, and I have only grown more happy about that selection.
This is a great collection, containing an even greater poem.

I am reminded of this book a lot because apparently the board game adaptation is quite good.
Luckily, so is the book.
Basically it is about a secret organization of people with mental powers that are the secret force behind the throne, so to speak.
If that appeals, this is a well done version.
Note on the art. At first, I didn’t care for it. It reminds of Jeff Lemire (love his writing. Not a big fan of his art). By the end, it just felt perfect. Right for this.

Getting back to some poetry, this is a collection by Marilyn Dumont from 2015 and (I think) the third book by her I have read. She delves into her Metis roots here and her family connection to Gabriel Dumont. (In a coincidence, I have recently purchased a book on the history of the Gabriel Dumont Institute.)

I was already a fan of Kate Beaton’s Hark! A Vagrant work, but this is not that. In a way, we should be grateful for her career as a web cartoonist because it allowed her to eventually create Ducks.
This is autobiography and the story it reveals is both tragic and complicated. It is important to read the Afterward because the initial takeaway might not be what she was intending.
The place where she and I might (and I emphasize MIGHT) differ, is the idea that the world there isn’t reflective of the world everywhere.
I highly recommend this. There is quite a good chance this will be my #1 read of the year, and we aren’t quite half way through,

I mentioned I was reading this book when I was talking about Squire, and now I have finished it. This is fundamentally a steampunk mystery, wit fantasy elements laid over a real world period piece. But it does so while giving us a different pov than a euro-centric fantasy, which is a nice change.
But all of that aside, we have a fun story, while not particularly complicated (I figured out the mystery long before the end), that also gives us a surprising finish beyond the reveal.
I give this one a solid recommendation.

I have this in my comic library but it isn’t actually a comic. Instead it is the full play of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, accompanied by paintings and drawings by Charles Vets. (In addition, it is a signed copy by Vess – #95 out of 1000).
I think of it as a companion piece the the Sandman issue where Shakespeare writes and performed the play for both Morpheus and the fairy ensemble who appear within it.
That aside, if you are a fan of either William Shakespeare or Charles Less, this is a lovely book.

This is one of my favourite graphic novels, despite it being pretty much completely free of plot (though not story). Rather than being about characters, it is about place, with basically the same ‘camera angle’ repeated page after page, while jumping through time. Some images overlay.
But words are never going to do it justice.
I already loved this when I first read it, but for the last four years I have loved in an old farmhouse built in 1888. Imagining what everything looked like across the decades, or before, fascinates me.

It is somewhat coincidental that I got this book while I was also reading P. Djeli Clark’s Master of Djinn.
They are very different but some of what I would say would be similar. Take a story that could be interesting, but tell it from different perspective. ON the surface this could be a story about someone who goes of to join the Army before learning that things there aren’t what they had expected.
Heck, take Starship Troopers and haven it written by… someone else. (In a way, Heinlein could be the antagonist in this one…)
All that aside, this is a very good read.
(As a side note, I found myself unsure from character to character whether they were male or female. I quickly realized that it didn’t matter. That is kind of cool.)

This is basically a detective story – quite noir – which I like. Add in the JLI, because why not?
If you are concerned about continuity, look elsewhere, because some things happen here that probably shouldn’t (and even though this is only the first half of the story, I am pretty sure I know who the guilty party is, and in-universe, just no), but as a stand alone story with recognizable characters, sure.
